 DMU

5th September 1979

A late Summer scene on the Preston to Ormskirk line, as a two-car Class 108 with DMBS M51941 leading, accelerates away from the token exchange at Midge Hall whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 5th 1979. The former crossing keepers cottage is on the right of the unit, the building being set back as the route was once double track in the days before the line was severed at Ormskirk and services ran to and from Liverpool Exchange. The landscape here is dominated by Globe Mill an animal feed plant located adjacent to the signalbox and level crossing at Midge Hall. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

7th November 1982

A Class 108 heads into the gathering gloom with its tail lamp visible late on a Autumn afternoon as it passes the Cocker Bar between Midge Hall and Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on November 7th 1982. Dominating this scene is the Down Distant signal for Northbound trains approaching Midge Hall, unfortunately in the intervening years the tall peg has since been replaced with a reflective board. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

23rd December 1982

A two-car Class 108 DMU formed of cars M51942 & M56497 was passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton, whilst running between Midge Hall and Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on December 23rd 1982. The tall distant signal for Preston bound trains approaching Midge Hall has now been replaced with a reflective distant board. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

20th May 1983

A 2-Car Class 104 DMU with M53527 leading, passes Cocker Bar Farm as it runs between Midge Hall and Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on May 20th 1983. This was the period when these units had been reduced from three cars with the removal of the unpowered centre trailer car. The down Midge Hall distant signal against the farm access bridge has since been replaced by a reflective board. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

29th May 1985

Having worked over the Pennines from Leeds to Preston, an Eastern Region 2-Car Class 101 with West Yorkshire Metrotrain branding was used on a fill-in turn from Preston to Ormskirk at tea-time on May 29th 1985. This was a Monday-Friday routine, that saw three different DMU sets working to Ormskirk in the early evening, the services crossing in the loop at Rufford. Having worked to Ormskirk E54076/E 53136 pass over Pages Crossing returning to Preston on the approach to Midge Hall. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

10th September 1985

With a friendly wave from the driver, a three-car Swindon built Class 120 Cross Country DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second M53739 leading, had just passed over Pages Crossing, South of Midge Hall with the 18.00 Preston to Ormskirk service on September 11th 1985. This was a regular turn for a Class 120 unit in 1985/86. With the passing loop at Rufford being used for its intended purpose (trains passing), the evening peak service on the Ormskirk line saw three different DMU sets in operation. The normal service unit was in use, then a West Yorkshire based set made one return trip to Ormskirk from Preston, filling-in whilst having worked from Leeds to Preston, and finally one of the Class 120 sets normally used on Blackpool North-Manchester Victoria duties, also made one return trip along the line. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

10th September 1985

Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53523 was passing over Pages Crossing as it was approaching Midge Hall with an Ormskirk to Preston service on September 11th 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

11th September 1985

Class 104 53523 leads a Preston to Ormskirk service along the former double track mainline at Pages Crossing, Ulnes Walton, just west of Midge Hall on the 11th September 1985. The white trackside building is an extended former crossing keepers cottage, an occupation crossing still serves farms on both sides of the railway here. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

4th April 1988

With Globe Mill at Midge Hall in the far distance, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of DMSL M53529 - complete with a Network South East logo on the cab front - and the DMBS presumably being M53421, was passing Pages Crossing with a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 4th 1988. This was the period when first generation DMU sets that were past their best, were kept operational to cover for the then almost new ailing Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

6th April 1988

Set: N652

With Midge Hall visible in the far-distance, former West Midlands Class 116 Suburban 2-car DMU formed of cars M53870 & M53923, were passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton, en-route to their first intermediate station call at Croston whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 6th 1988. The unit was transferred to Newton Heath Depot in October 1987 as cover for ailing and stored Class 142 Pacers. Set N652 was eventually withdrawn from service in November 1988 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
